c.1955 Superior Toy, Davy Crockett Frontier Dime Bank
Multicolored lithographed tinplate, dime registering bank featuring Davy Crockett with rifle (Ole' Betsy) in hand. Standing tall and wearing his coonskin hat, the plains trail off to the horizon behind him. After the first dime was inserted the bank would lock. Collect 50 dimes ($5.00) and it opens automatically. It may have been manufactured by the Superior Toy & Mfg. Co. in Chicago. Square with "rounded corners". The four short panel sides show the following; Davy Crockett logo on the front face, Davy facing left on the right side, "Insert Dime Here" on top face, and Davy facing right on left side. The back is chrome plated. Includes two dimes inside the bank (I didn't put them in there). Crockett toys were very popular during the 1950's. This bank in particular is one of the more scarce items. While trying to identify the manufacturer I noted only one listed reference for this bank (Hake's Guide To Western Toys). Other dime banks which are considered difficult to find were listed several times. Size: 2½" square x 5/8" thick. Sold: Dec. 2005
